How it works

How to use the eisenhower matrix

1. Add your tasks

Type each task and pick a box — or add them all to “Do first” and sort them after.

2. Sort by urgent and important

Drag tasks between the four boxes. Be honest about what’s truly important.

3. Act on it

Do the first box today, schedule the second, hand off the third and drop the fourth.

Good to know

What is the Eisenhower matrix?

The Eisenhower matrix is a simple way to prioritise: sort every task by whether it’s urgent and whether it’s important. It’s named after US President Dwight D. Eisenhower and was popularised by Stephen Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

The trick is the second box — important but not urgent. That’s where planning, learning and deep work live, and it’s the work that gets pushed aside when everything else feels urgent. Schedule it before it becomes a fire.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the four quadrants of the Eisenhower matrix?

Do first (urgent and important), Schedule (important, not urgent), Delegate (urgent, not important) and Drop or do later (neither urgent nor important).

How do I decide what’s important?

Important tasks move your goals forward. Urgent tasks demand attention now. A good test: would it matter in a month if this didn’t get done?

Is my matrix saved?

Yes, in your browser only. Nothing is sent to us. Use “Print or save PDF” to keep a copy.
